The Ambassador of Ethiopia commented on the situation around the Renaissance dam
Military conflict Ethiopia with Egypt because of the differences in construction on the Blue Nile dam "Revival" (Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam - GERD) is unreal, said in an interview with RIA Novosti, Ambassador of Ethiopia to Russia, to Alemayehu Tegegn of Aargau.
"No. My answer is no," replied of Aargau, on the question whether the real military conflict in the region because of the tension in the negotiations on the GERD.
"Now trilateral negotiations (for the dam - ed.) are under the auspices of the African Union, and I think all problems will be removed very soon. GERD is not a cause for conflict. The dam is a valuable facility for the region. It is a source of cooperation, not conflict," the diplomat said.
In addition, Aargau noted that the treatment of Egypt in the UN Security Council to intervene in the tripartite talks on the dam was "pointless, useless." "The construction of the dam is a development issue, not a safety issue, the issue of Ethiopia, regional issue. It will benefit Africa, to the benefit of Ethiopia. The Security Council did not discuss these issues. The dam does not pose a threat to security, so from the outset, the appeal to the UN security Council was not supported by Ethiopia," - said the Ambassador of Ethiopia.
Ethiopia is implementing a large-scale project of the construction of the dam in 2012. Its launch, according to experts, will inevitably lead to water shortages in the Sudan and Egypt, located downstream. Since the beginning of the construction of the three countries have already held over a dozen meetings in order to resolve the water allocation issues and to start a new object, but differences remain.
Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan in the first half of June resumed its suspended in February talks on Ethiopian dam on the Nile. Since the beginning of July, the dialogue is mediated by the African Union.
Previously Cairo officially asked the UN Security Council to intervene in the negotiations on the construction of the dam, "to avoid unilateral steps on the part of Addis Ababa". Egypt stated that it had taken such a step because of the "stalled" negotiations in connection with the "not positive" position of Ethiopia and the lack of "political desires".
