Foreign Ministry: Russia acts in the Arctic commensurate with the military-political situation
Russia acts in the Arctic commensurate with the military-political situation, said in an interview with RIA Novosti Ambassador at large of the MFA of Russia Nikolay Korchunov.
Previously the first Deputy assistant Secretary of state for European Affairs and Eurasian Affairs Michael Murphy said that the increase of Russian military presence in the Arctic "beyond defense", the Pentagon allies have to reply to this. In particular, he mentioned the creation in Russia of a new Arctic command and an Arctic troops, the restoration of ports and airfields, construction of new infrastructure, plans to deploy the s-400 system on the Kola Peninsula.
"The activities of Russia in the modernization of its armed forces and carrying out activities of combat and operational training in the Arctic is not excessive and is defensive in nature. It is proportionate to the current military-political situation, does not create threats to the national security of the Arctic States, does not violate any international legal agreements and are aimed, in particular, on ensuring environmental safety, life and scientific work in the Northern latitudes," - said the diplomat.
Also, Korchunov stressed, "Russia has never deployed in the Arctic their military contingents on the territories of other countries and did not provide its territory for the deployment of troops of other States, including non-regional".
"In addition, Russia has refrained from holding military exercises in the Arctic with non-Arctic States, since their military activity in the high latitudes only weaken regional security, promote conflict and tension," - said the diplomat.
