The Ministry of foreign Affairs has responded to claims by the United States Navy on the ice breaker "Ivan Papanin"
"Ivan Papanin" is not a classic icebreaker, and a warship, so the installation of weapons should not cause issues, said in an interview with RIA Novosti Ambassador at large of the MFA of Russia Nikolay Korchunov.
Earlier, the commander of the U.S. Navy in Europe and Africa Admiral James Foggo, speaking about the new Russian ice breaker "Ivan Papanin", noted that it can carry cruise missiles "Caliber" and stressed that this type of missile is not a defensive weapon.
"We do not know about the accusations in question. Perhaps this refers to the statements of the American military against the ice breaker "Ivan Papanin". However, this is not a classic icebreaker, a multifunctional patrol ship, developed for the Russian Navy. That Navy ship installed weapons, hardly should cause issues, especially if these weapons do not contravene international agreements to which it is party, our country, as in the case of sea-based missiles "Caliber", - said the diplomat.
"The installation of containers with cruise missiles "Caliber" or "Uranium" on our icebreakers, which, incidentally, according to Russian media, is provided for only in the special period. At this time it is planned that the court can be involved to enhance the ship grouping of the Northern fleet, in the zone of responsibility includes the entire route of the NSR and the Arctic coast of Russia", - he stressed.
The head patrol ship ice class of the project 23550 "Ivan Papanin" was launched in October 2019, is to be commissioned on 25 November 2023. The second ship of the "Nikolay Zubov" was founded in November 2019, delivery is scheduled for November 2024.
The ship, designed by Central marine design Bureau "Almaz", combines the functionality of the tugboat, patrol boats and an icebreaker. The project is the latest development in the interests of equipping the surface component of the Navy.
It is designed for protection and monitoring of water resources in difficult ice conditions, escorting and towing in the port of detained ships, and support vessels participating in rescue operations, transportation of special cargo.
Multifunctional patrol ship ice class will be able to break ice up to 1,7 meters. It has a displacement of about 9 thousand tons, a hull length of 100 meters, width - about 20 meters, full speed of about 18 knots, endurance of 70 days. The ship will be equipped with a portable anti-aircraft missile systems artillery. The possibility of permanent deployment of the ship's helicopter. The ship will be installed radar lighting air and surface conditions and meteorological station.
The ship will be able to effectively perform tasks in the Arctic zone, both independently and as part of groups of warships, and to perform escort functions in the Arctic communications.
