In Siberia, scientists will be looking for the coronavirus in bats

Russian scientists in the next two years plan to explore in search of coronaviruses genomes inhabiting the territory of Siberia bats, told RIA Novosti the head of the Department of experimental modeling and pathogenesis of infectious diseases, Federal research centre for fundamental and translational medicine (FTC FTM) Alexander Shestopalov.

He noted that the coronavirus was transmitted to humans in China due to its large population and a large population of bats. However, according to him, this does not mean that living on the territory of Russia, the bats can also be carriers of the coronavirus.

According to him, biological materials of bats will gather in different parts of Siberia, from Omsk region to Buryatia, and then will explore their genomes for the presence of coronavirus. Some conclusions can be done after receiving the results, he added.
