The situation in the Eastern Mediterranean region, two days after Turkish alerts about research in the area of the island of kastellorizo remains stable, the Greek government is watching the situation and taking measures on all fronts, said government spokesman Stelios Petsas at a briefing on Thursday.
The hydrographic service of Antalya on Tuesday released the international Navtex warning about the seismic research to the South and East of the island of kastellorizo from 21 July to 2 August. Greece claims that the area is in its exclusive economic zone. The Hellenic armed forces have been alerted across the country. Turkey has called the claims of Greece regarding the seismic studies to be unfounded.
"Today, twenty-four hours after the release of the illegal Turkish Navtex, the situation remains stable. We follow it with equanimity and willingness," said Petsas.
"At the same time, the government adopts at the national and international level, all the necessary initiatives. Greece, as stressed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis from the first moment, moving with confidence and absolute readiness. The government indicates that the announcement of Turkish research in the Greek continental shelf of new illegal Navtex is an escalation of tensions in the region. At the same time, it demonstrates the persistence of Turkey's violations and its complete contempt for international law," said Petsas.
According to him, the government States that Greece will not allow violations of its sovereignty and will do everything necessary to protect its sovereign rights.
