The Minister of defence of Greece informed the US about the military activities of Turkey

The Minister of national defence of Greece Nikolaos Panayotopoulos informed the Secretary of defense Mark Esper about the military activity of Turkey in the area of the island of kastellorizo and Greece's determination to protect its sovereign rights, said the Greek defense Ministry.

The hydrographic service of Antalya on Tuesday released the international Navtex warning about the seismic research to the South and East of the island of kastellorizo from 21 July to 2 August. In Ankara it was announced that a research ship Oruc Reis will be in the area. There was also a 15 Turkish military vehicles. For this reason the Hellenic armed forces have been alerted across the country.

Kastelorizo, the most remote island of Greece, from him to the nearest Greek coast more than 10 kilometers, and to Turkey – just two kilometers away.

"The first Minister informed his American colleague about current events in the area South and East of kastellorizo, where Turkey has announced its intention to conduct research in an area which includes the Greek continental shelf. Panayotopoulos presented the situation with the movement of warships in the region and stressed that our country is determined to defend its sovereign rights if necessary". – the Ministry said.

Besides the exchange of views on developments in the Eastern Mediterranean discussed the new prospects and opportunities created by the signing of the Protocol on amendments to agreement on cooperation in the area of mutual defence (MDCA) to further deepen their strategic cooperation in defence and military-technical sector.

"In particular, reaffirmed the importance of bilateral cooperation for security and stability in the wider region, was recognized as the contribution of Greece as a strong ally in NATO and a pillar of stability in the region", - reported the Ministry of defense.

The Ministers also discussed the weapons programme, while stressing the desire to further develop mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of defence and technology.

"The Minister of national defence referred to the initiatives of Greece on the development of tripartite schemes of regional defence cooperation with the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean with the aim of ensuring security, stability and prosperity in the region", - stated in the message.

Greece participates in tripartite agreements with Cyprus and Israel, Cyprus and Egypt.
