In the Russian Orthodox Church, remember the martyrs nun Varvara and Elizabeth Romanov

In the Russian Orthodox Church on Saturday to celebrate the memory day of St. Martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna Romanova, the famous founder of the Marfo-Mariinsky monastery, and nun Varvara, who died 102 years ago in the Sverdlovsk region.

The Holy Martyr Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna (Elizabeth Alexandra Louise Alice) was born 1 Nov 1864 in Darmstadt (Germany). After the marriage of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich Romanov moved to Russia, where he is actively engaged in charity. She founded the Marfo-Mariinsky convent in Moscow, was Chairman Petrovsky of the charity in Saint-Petersburg, Saint-Petersburg ladies ' Committee of the Russian red cross society, the Tsarskoye Selo charitable society and Asylum for the feeble and convalescent children. In 1896 he founded the Elizabethan community of sisters of mercy in St. Petersburg. She was also a Trustee of the Philharmonic society, at the Stroganov school and established a home for the elderly theatrical workers.

Elizabeth Feodorovna was murdered on 18 July 1918 by the Bolsheviks: its alive were thrown down the mineshaft near Alapaevsk (Sverdlovsk oblast). In total there were executed eight people – the members of the Romanov family and their entourage. Two of those killed canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church as a Martyr: Grand Duchess Elizaveta Fyodorovna and the nun Varvara.

Now in the Martha and Mary convent of mercy convent is located. According to the site of the monastery, there are eight social projects. In the monastery help "to those most in need" children with disabilities, orphans, the sick, the infirm, the aged people "and all who were in difficult life situations".
