Scientists estimated the possible consequences of a fuel spill on lake Baikal
Oil slick from a spill of 100 litres of fuel, as happened on the lake, can cover the waters area more than 30 thousand square meters and cause excessive concentrations thousands of times, told RIA Novosti doctor of geological-mineralogical Sciences, Director of the Limnological Institute of the Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Andrei Fedotov.
Previously, the Supervisory authority has informed about the beginning of the inspection due to the oil spill from the banked in a storm the vessel on lake Baikal. The incident occurred at the pier in the village of Khuzhir. Presumably, more than a hundred liters of fuel could fall into lake Baikal, the owner of the vessel claims that resulted in just a few liters.
Fedotov added that the oil film prevents the penetration of oxygen in water and adversely affects the living organisms in the water column.
