Bashar Al-Assad. 20 years of reform, in defiance of international pressure

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad over 20 years of leadership of Syria has maintained high popularity among his people, continues to resist pressure from the West and defeating terror in a bloody war, has no competitors in the upcoming presidential elections to be held in 2021, but can still make a sudden move, consider interviewed by RIA Novosti experts.

Asad headed the Syrian Arab Republic on 17 July 2000, succeeding his father Hafez Assad, who was President of the country since 1971.

According to the Syrian politician, whose party for a time, considered the opposition in the country, the position of President Assad played an important role in the preservation of the territorial integrity of the country in opposition to a significant international force led by the United States in Seawrite and Turkey in the North, the Syrian leader with the support of Russia and Iran could save the state.

"First, the man we know is Bashar al-Assad, and we know that he did, and his story, all this has a positive effect on his chances. Second, the lack of a real competitor. We do not see a person today, able to gather around him more of the popular votes. Therefore, his actions and the lack of worthy opponents - the two main factors for the victory," added al-Khalil, answering the question about the chances of Assad winning the election.

Professor of history at the Lebanese state University Ronnie Khalil in an interview with RIA Novosti, did not rule out the unexpected "strategic decisions" on the part of Assad in the elections next year.

According to the historian, Assad has a lot of supporters among the Syrians. Including his support of Christians for the sake of a comfortable existence which is in Syria, he did a lot. "We have never seen a religious or sectarian harassment from the authorities in the SAR. The West and even Israel realized that to properly deal with the current Syrian authorities, than with terrorists such as ISIS (banned in the Russian terrorist group - ed.) who could come to power," he added.

The Professor recalled that the President of Syria has been and remains a friend of Russia and some other countries, but before the war he had good relations with Western countries, including the United States.

Because of the negative aspects of the Syrian leadership in the past, according to the historian, is the absence of democracy in relation to the population of the full extent of the word. This factor could be one of the pretexts of attempts of armed revolution, he said, but the real reasons should be sought in the international geopolitical confrontation. As in the country in fact the Assad's reforms improved the lives of their fellow citizens in terms of improvement of infrastructure and provision of daily living needs: electricity, roads, education and so on. The Syrian leader in particular has paid great attention to religious and historical complexes, taking into account the interests and aspirations of all faiths, without exception, concluded the expert.
