Valaam monastery wants to put the trout and the honey in Moscow and St. Petersburg

Valaam monastery will be engaged in processing and supply a private trout in Moscow and St. Petersburg, as well as plans to organize the sale of their honey at farms in both capitals, said in an interview with RIA Novosti, the Abbot of the Valaam Spaso-Preobrazhensky Stavropegial monastery Bishop Trinity Pankraty.

"Recently, thanks to the help of benefactors, we have restored a trout farm. Before the fish was on the table of the brethren or sold on the island. The next stage – refining. We want to put smoked and salted trout (packaged in compliance with sanitary norms) in Petersburg or Moscow," - said the Bishop Pankraty.

Also, according to him, in the monastery involved in the restoration of the apiary.

"First honey was in 2019. After a few years, I think, will be a big apiary, and will begin the implementation of: honey in small batches, most likely, will go to the metochion of the Valaam monastery in Moscow and St. Petersburg", - said the Abbot.

He said that personally involved in the restoration of apiaries. "I love the life of bees, it resembles a monastery doing their own thing, there is mutual support, hierarchy, joint work", - concluded the Bishop.

Thursday at the monastery for pilgrims has opened a Central manor house and main temple of the monastery – Holy Transfiguration Cathedral. Earlier, the Bishop Pankraty has informed that the monastery you can visit a one-day tour organized group, but pilgrims can't get to worship, confession and communion, and venerate the relics and icons.

Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy Valaam monastery is located on Valaam, the archipelago of lake Ladoga. According to Church tradition, the founders of the monastery – missionary Sergius and Herman of Valaam appeared here at the end of X century. According to another version the monastery was founded in the XIV century. At different times of the Valaam archipelago is located on the territory of Russia, Sweden and Finland. In 1940, after the Soviet-Finnish war he became Soviet territory and was abandoned. The revival of the monastery began in 1989, when the island was settled six monks.

1993-present Governor (Abbot) of the monastery is Archimandrite Pankraty (Zherdev), Bishop of the Trinity. Now the convent is home to about 200 inhabitants. The monastery complex consists of the main manor house and 12 hermitages. The stavropegic monastery subordinated directly to the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill. Every year the monastery is visited by over 100 thousand pilgrims and tourists.
