The opposition demanded Zelensky to condemn the change of the status of Aya Sofia

Ukrainian party "the Opposition platform For life" requires the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to oppose changes in the status of the Hagia Sophia in Turkey.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan on Friday signed a decree on awarding the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul to the status of the mosque. Before that, the state Council of Turkey annulled the decision of 1934 about the Museum the status of a Cathedral.

"The opposition platform For life" stands firmly on the positions of the protection of traditional Christian values and canonical Orthodoxy. We believe that the Ukrainian government and personally President Vladimir Zelensky required to convey the concerns of Ukrainian citizens about the decision of turning Hagia Sophia into a mosque until the Turkish leadership," - said in a statement posted Saturday on the website of the party.

The party noted that Ukraine as a country-partner of Turkey, is obliged to inform its management about the risks of such policy decisions.

"To present a convincing case of its own recent history, demonstrating against state interference in religious issues and interreligious relations", - said the political forces.

Hagia Sophia was founded by the Christian Emperor Justinian, and was opened on 27 December 537. Cathedral over a thousand years was the largest Church in the Christian world. After the capture of Constantinople by the Ottomans and the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453, the Cathedral was converted into a mosque but since 1934 the building by decree of the founder of the modern Turkish state Kemal Ataturk became a Museum and was included in the world heritage list of UNESCO.
