Lavrov discussed with the foreign Minister of Cyprus on bilateral cooperation

The Minister of foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov discussed by phone with the foreign Minister of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulides topical issues on the bilateral agenda, and issues of a Cyprus settlement, said Thursday the Russian dipvedomstva.

According to him, the conversation took place at the initiative of the Cypriot side.

"The foreign Ministers exchanged views on topical issues on the bilateral agenda with emphasis on implementation of the programme in the framework of celebrating this year the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Cyprus. Also discussed was the issue of a Cyprus settlement in the context of its forthcoming review in the UN Security Council," - said the Russian foreign Ministry.

Cyprus de facto divided with 1974 years after the military invasion of Turkey, responding to a coup attempt in Cyprus with the participation of the Greek military. The Turkish armed forces on the night of 21 July 1974 invaded Northern Cyprus and occupied 37% of territory of the country. In 1983 in the occupied territories was proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus which is recognized only by Turkey.
