The first group of refugee children went from Greece to Portugal

The first group of 25 unaccompanied minor refugees went from Greece to Portugal, only Portugal will take 500 homeless, according to the Greek Ministry of migration and asylum.

In coming in Portugal the group of 19 Afghan nationals, four Egyptian and one from Gambia and Iran. They were in the migrant accommodation centres on the Islands of Lesbos, Samos and Chios.

Wednesday, the first group of 25 unaccompanied minors will go to Finland, ready to take 100 children.

The first Deputy Minister of migration and asylum George Koumoutsakos announced that the program comes with a small delay of a few weeks due to the effects of the pandemic.

"In addition to unaccompanied children, but there is also a programme for voluntary return to countries of origin. It's Greek program, which we have received support from the European Commission. We call asylum seekers who are on the Islands and arrived in Greece before 1 January 2020, to return with some financial support from home. We are planning the first flight for this complex program from Greece to Iraq in the coming weeks. But most importantly, today 25 children starting a new life, and we would hope, better life," said Koumoutsakos.

He thanked the government of Portugal for practical solidarity.

"They decided to adopt 500 children, and this is a major help for Greece, which is faced with a problem beyond her capabilities," the official said.
