Propaganda vs news: why the Western media is losing its positions

MIA "Russia today" presented the study "Octopus 2.0. Coronavirus in Russia", devoted to the image of our country in the Western (and not only) media. This time the focus of attention of researchers got pandemic, and was covered by top media is not only the "Big seven", but also China, where occurred the first outbreak of the disease.

Replenishment was very fortunate, because statistics according to the Chinese media provided a rather unexpected background for broadcast by Western media of picture of the world.

The whole "Octopus 2.0" did not bring any surprises: COVID-19 was used by the Western media as another media a reason to continue anti-Russian propaganda.

The undisputed leader here were Americans — 58% of publications on the topic in the five most significant (in terms of coverage), the American media had a negative tone. Have followed the German media, the figure was 44 per cent of Canadians and 41%, and the British — 38%.

At the same time, the remaining three countries of the "sevens" share of negativity against Russia on this topic is much lower in Japan — 33%, in Italy — 28%, and France, and altogether an impressive 21%.

However, with the positive in all of them is not very from one to five percent. The exception is Italy, where as many as nine percent of mentions of Russia and coronavirus had a positive tone. It's easy to assume that the assistance provided to us Italians in the fight against the epidemic (sending medical resources and doctors) provided the media of a higher share of favorable publications.

However, in these figures, the most curious, perhaps, a different aspect: they clearly show the most relevant geopolitical trends of the moment. On the one hand, the Anglo-Saxons (which is from the Old world that overseas) remain at the forefront of anti-Russian attack, being its driving force. But they are clearly losing the support of even close allies, who are trying to sustain a more neutral approach and not to be zealous of Russophobia, which is quite logical: the times have changed and the court has long not 2014.

At the same time figures reveal how challenging — primarily for myself — is Germany. An active anti-Russian position of the leading German media is manifestly contrary to public policy, the line where the Berlin not only promotes and protects the joint projects with Russia, but consistently gets rid of prooccupations dependence on the United States. However, the media clearly remains rigid subordination and unconditional loyalty of key publications no national interests, and Washington's overlord.

With regard to specific topics that were used in the anti-Russian-Coveney propaganda, they are not distinguished by the originality, or otherwise reduce to two a long time and familiar leitmotifs: Russia is once again dying, like never before, but it also represents a huge threat to the entire world.

In particular, this resulted in criticism and the General situation in the country, and the state of the national health system, and the actions of the Russian authorities in the fight against COVID-19 — with predictions that the situation is once again hanging by a thread and could collapse at any moment. As for threats the rest of the planet, in this case nothing new was not invented also: the main accusations in the Moscow campaign of misinformation about the pandemic, up to the allegations that Russia is subtly inspires humanity ideas about the futility of hand-washing.

Of course, in the Chinese media picture lighting problems is drastically different, and it's not even 20% of positive publications about Russia in the context of combating coronavirus and the absence of negative. The main feature is the sheer number of articles on the subject. During the period from March to June — in the top 5 media of China was published more than 1,200 articles about the Russian confrontation of the epidemic. For comparison: during the same period of time the minimum number of texts came to Canada — 238, and the indicators of the other six countries range between 371 (Italy) and 470 (Japan). By the way, the Americans with their 428 articles in fifth place in the overall list.

It turns out that for three months the Chinese media has published on the topic of "fashion industry in Russia" is almost three times more materials than, like, the most powerful on the planet the American media. Moreover, it is worth Recalling that the Chinese have 80% of them were neutral and informational in nature, that is it mostly just on news reports.

It would be a mistake to write off such a tremendous difference to special attention and China's interest in Russian Affairs. It seems that everything is much simpler and more banal: in the case of more hard work and greater efficiency leading Chinese media, which is processed and passed through a much greater flow of information than their Western colleagues and competitors.

In fact, it confirmed Western fears about the loss of information leadership. Of course, for presenting a class, they swell to anecdotal forms, but essentially unfounded.

Once the West has created the media in the contemporary sense, became the unconditional leader and role model for all others. Freedom of speech and dissemination of information has become one of its main trump card in the fight against ideological and geopolitical adversaries — and have been used successfully.

But right now we are seeing a growing crisis that not long ago seemed unshakable system.

More and more difficult for Western media to compete with the media "not free world", whether China or Russia. You can laugh at overclock American and European politicians panic about the "mediasearch of the Kremlin", but RT and Sputnik, and indeed increasingly in social networks more than the most prominent and influential news sources in Europe. More than 1,200 Chinese media reports, compared with less than 450 — from us only a single theme, and quite narrow and not very hot for these States reflect exactly the same process.

The Western media is getting worse (compared to her grown-up competitors) carry out its main function of storing and presenting to the audience the most extensive and diverse news media. This applies to content and delivery.

Yes, the West continues to retain the label of "most free, fair, and professional press." But here the situation is like with the dress of the king from the fairytale — one day it just stops working.
