As justification for these actions was called the sanctions imposed by the European Union in 2014 in the light of events in Ukraine. The President of Russia Vladimir Putin, commenting on the situation, said that the Russian authorities will do everything to support Sputnik when working in other countries.

In a statement on March 1, Desir condemned the detention and interrogation of journalists Sputnik in Ankara and Istanbul.

As noted by Desir, June 4, he received a letter from a member of the Federation Council, Alexei Pushkov, expressing concern about violence by the American police against journalists Michael Turgiev from RIA Novosti and Nicole Russell of Sputnik. 1 Jun Desir issued a statement in which he expressed concern about the violence and urged the U.S. government to provide safe work of journalists covering the protests.
