Scientists have discovered what drugs reduce the risk of Contracting coronavirus

Patients with HIV are less susceptible to disease COVID-19 if, in the course of antiretroviral therapy (ART) take a combination of the drugs tenofovir and emtricitabine, reported the Ministry of health of Spain, citing data from research.

The results of the study suggest that the risk of developing COVID-19 in patients with HIV are not higher than in the General population. In this case, those who are taking tenofovir/emtricitabine (a combination of two antiretroviral drugs used for the treatment and prevention of HIV infection), less prone to disease COVID-19 than patients undergoing other treatments, is spoken in the message of Ministry of health of Spain.

The study was conducted in 60 hospitals located in different parts of the country participated 77,5 thousands of patients diagnosed with HIV. In 236 of them were diagnosed COVID-19, 151 were taken to hospitals, 15 were in intensive care, 20 died.

The authors of a study published in the American journal Annals of Internal Medicine, I believe that we need additional tests to confirm the effectiveness of the various antiretroviral drugs for the treatment of COVID-19.

"Confirmation of these data will be a major achievement to prevent infection with health staff and vulnerable people," - says the Ministry of health.

Currently, Spain hosts a variety of clinical trials aimed to assess the risk of spread COVID among the medical staff. This is one of the most extensive of such studies in Europe. It runs in 67 hospitals in 14 Autonomous communities with the participation of four thousand people.
