UNDP Tajikistan will provide the means to counter COVID-19

The country office of the United Nations development programme (UNDP) will provide assistance to Tajikistan in the amount of 2.7 million dollars for projects designed to meet urgent medical and socio-economic needs arising from the epidemic of the coronavirus.

"UNDP has initiated a comprehensive study to assess the impact of coronavirus COVID-19 to the enterprises of small and medium-sized businesses, livelihoods and lives of citizens and to develop long term support plan", noted UNDP resident representative Pratibha Mehta.

"We already know about the direct impact of the global pandemic on the ability of citizens and businesses to deal with it. Needs in the field of health should remain a priority, but it is equally important to begin to address the problems of socio-economic problems faced by vulnerable citizens," she said.

Part of the UNDP funds were used to create the information coordination center at the Ministry of health and social protection of the population.

Funds also will be used to support hospitals in establishing safe handling and disposal of medical waste such as used and soiled face masks, goggles, personal protective clothing, empty bottles.

UNDP will support civil initiatives and measures to assist small and medium-sized enterprises, young businessmen, households headed by women.

Will also be assisted in ensuring the continuity of public administration, even if civil servants may not remain in the workplace.
