Limarenko: amendments to the Constitution to remove the issue of belonging Kuril Islands

Amendments to the Constitution will remove the question of ownership of the Kuril Islands, the head of the Sakhalin region Valery Limarenko.

Earlier, Secretary General of the Japanese government Yoshihide Suga stated that Japan made a presentation of Russia in connection with prospecting in the sea of Okhotsk, including the Islands of Kunashir, Shikotan, Iturup and Habomai. Moscow had previously notified Tokyo of the works in the area between Sakhalin, Kamchatka and the Kuril Islands, which will last for three months. Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov said that Russia has the right to conduct on its territory of any research.

"A few days ago we once again – for the umpteenth time – witnessed the territorial claims of the Japanese side. The reason was that the exploration in the area of the Kuril Islands. Work in our territory, we have an absolute right. A right paid for with the lives of our ancestors who fought for the freedom and independence of the Motherland" - quoted Limarenko on the website of the Governor and government of Sakhalin region.

Limarenko said that after a few days the voting will end on the amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation. "They are, as you know, reinforce the inseparability of Russian territories. Once and for all. For this vote the residents of Sakhalin and kurilchanami. I am sure that we will support the majority of Russians, he added.

"And after a few days, similar claims from abroad will be just meaningless", - concluded the Governor.

Voting on amendments to the Constitution of the Russian Federation began across the country on June 25, it will last until 1 July. Online voting, which will be able to participate only residents of Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod region, was held from 25 to 30 June.
