The world turned upside down: Germany is preparing sanctions against United States

The American media has found something that should cause Washington greater shock than the discovery of life on Mars gardens or blooming on Jupiter. Agency of business information Bloomberg claims that the German political elite showed national pride, because the only way to interpret the reports that inside the government of Germany is maturing a document containing sanctions against the United States, which should be taken in the case, if Washington decides to impose "a hell of sanctions" against participants in the construction of the "Nord stream — 2".

The Agency says: "Germany is preparing to strike back at the United States if President Donald trump makes good on his threat to kill the pipeline "Nord stream — 2" with additional sanctions. As claimed by two German officials familiar with the discussions, the Merkel government is considering the option of exerting pressure with the aim of taking coordinated action at the EU level. According to the documents of the Ministry of economy of Germany, which were reviewed by Bloomberg News, the new us sanctions may hit is much greater (than before), the number of German and European companies and even government agencies."

The material of American journalists need to make a few clarifications. First, the version of the bill on new sanctions against the "Nord stream — 2", which is now under consideration in the us Congress, does not contain sanctions against the state structures of the European Union against Russian gas buyers or lenders of the project. Critics of the German position could point to this aspect as evidence that Bloomberg spoke with the anti-American-minded German politicians, or to conclude that the Merkel government, entrenched control freaks who think very bad about the USA and do not read the relevant laws on sanctions. Such arguments should not be considered adequate to the current political reality, though, because our American partners have many times demonstrated his ability to enter the most insane action just five minutes and, therefore, these steps should prepare in advance. As for the "paranoia", it is possible to put forward a slightly conspiratorial, but rather a realistic version of that German sources Bloomberg could specifically "merge" your contacts information about the German countermeasures, just so that senators and congressmen came up with the idea to toughen sanctions right before the vote.

It is also worth noting that the Germans had already articulated two different positions regarding the retaliatory action against the United States. On the one hand, the press Secretary of the Ministry of economy told Bloomberg that she knows nothing about the development of such measures, and on the other hand, on the 17th of June in the Bundestag held a closed meeting of the relevant Committee in which was discussed the question of sanctions against the "Nord stream — 2", and, as noted by the American media, after the meeting the head of the Committee said that the German government is intended to provide a well-tested collective response to the US action, which the Committee recognized violation of international law.

Noteworthy is the fact that in the position of deputies in the evaluation of senior (but unnamed) officials referenced by Bloomberg, featured one unusual aspect: the likely anti-American retaliatory measures would be taken not only on the German level but at the EU level in General, that would be pretty difficult, but exciting, with far-reaching consequences, in that case, if it can be brought to an end.

The fact that Germany from 16 June will challenge the status of the "President" of the European Council, a status that traditionally provides a significant advantage to the country that wants to promote some new element in the European political agenda. Moreover, Angela Merkel has now been put in a situation in which any sign of weakness in respect of official Washington is perceived to be quite painful from the point of view of domestic policy: Donald trump in the most public form outlined the requirement to pay him a trillion dollars on account of an alleged debt for the German defense, which Germany receives from the United States. If we add to this open blackmail (and the EU against the background of the coronavirus and the accompanying crisis is not enough only American President with his threats) and even tariff blackmail trump and the fact that the White house actively resisted the attempts of the EU to force American Internet companies like Amazon and Google, still have to pay taxes for income earned in the European Union, it turns out that the conditions for large-scale and fundamental conflict at the Washington — Brussels has already created and "jerk" may, at any time.

German politicians have not yet learned to speak to US with the same rigidity with which its position articulates the President of France macron, who is the author and supporter of the concept of the military independence of Europe from the United States and the transformation of the EU into an independent pole of world geopolitics in the era of a multipolar world. But the official Berlin have learned to help you in finding excuses to extend their independence and counter the American pressure. For example, as justification for Russian gas imports used arguments related to the need to build a "green economy", and higher environmental friendliness of natural gas compared to coal is a scientific fact that cannot be denied. And to justify political and even economic independence from the US, too, there was an interesting argument. The Guardian reports, citing a fresh interview of the German Chancellor: "Angela Merkel warned that the rest of the world can no longer take for granted the fact that the US still aspire to become a world leader and needs to adjust their priorities."

It turns out very beautiful in its own way ironic: the insubordination of the American wishlist is not due to a desire for freedom, and the fact that the US was once a good hegemon, and now they supposedly don't even want to play this role, and so someone else should carry that burden. Will be interesting to see the response of official American propaganda.

But, in the end, matter the pretexts and excuses, but real action and real cubic metres of gas, which has all chances to still go on the "Nord stream — 2" in Germany.
