The court in Paris sentenced the uncle of Bashar al-Assad to four years in prison
The Paris court sentenced the uncle of the Syrian President Bashar al - Assad, Rifat Assad to four years in prison for money laundering and embezzlement of public funds of the Syrian government, reports AFP.
Vosmidesyatniki Rifat Assad was not present at the hearing. His position was represented by the lawyers. In particular, he was convicted of money laundering and embezzlement of Syrian public funds in the period between 1996 and 2016.
It is noted that the court also ruled to confiscate the property of Assad.
Rifat Assad, the brother of the father of Bashar al-Assad. He was expelled from the country after the coup attempt in 1983, but in 1984 he was appointed to the nominal post of Vice-President which he held until 1998.
