Rosatom began endurance testing a new fuel for Dukovany NPP

Specialists of the Russian nuclear industry began the endurance test of nuclear fuel of the third generation, designed to improve the efficiency of the Czech nuclear power plant Dukovany, announced the press service of the machine-building division of Rosatom Atomenergomash.

At the site, the research and development base of enterprises of "Atomenergomash" JSC "OKB "Gidropress" (Podolsk, Moscow region) started the endurance test of the layout of the fuel cartridge PK3 for nuclear power reactors VVER-440, which are operated at Dukovany NPP. "The purpose of the tests – the study of the mechanical resistance of the working elements of the cassette PK3 in teplogenerirujushchej conditions as close to real" - explains the "Atomenergomash".

Unlike the working PK3 tapes from previous generations of nuclear fuel for reactors VVER-440 – advanced design, which has improved physical and thermal hydraulic characteristics of fuel. Work is performed under the current contract between Rosatom fuel company TVEL and Czech energy company ČEZ a.s. providing for the development and implementation of this modification of fuel at NPP Dukovany.

Dukovany NPP with an installed capacity of 2040 MW is composed of four power units with VVER-440 reactors (for 510 MW each) commissioned in 1985, 1986 (2-3) and 1987. Annually the plant produces about 13 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, covering about 20% of energy consumption in the Czech Republic. With regard to the Temelin NPP (two units with VVER-1000 reactors) nuclear power plant CURRENTLY provides 35% of all electricity generation in the country, according to this indicator the Czech Republic is among the ten countries with the highest share of nuclear generation in the energy mix. Both Czech nuclear power plants since the commissioning of the work on Russian nuclear fuel production enterprise of TVEL "machine-building plant" (Elektrostal, Moscow oblast).
