Scientists estimated the losses of Russia from the melting permafrost

The damage from destruction or deformation of buildings, pipelines and infrastructure located on frozen ground in Russia, may be by 2050, about 250 billion dollars, said RIA Novosti Professor at the George Washington University (USA) Dmitry Streletsky.

He said that the researchers took into account sediment soil thawing and loss of bearing capacity due to warming permafrost.

"These two factors affect the condition of buildings and structures. We looked at the best climate models and predicted changes of permafrost, and after that loss associated with it. But may be negative effects: flooding on the river, bad weather, any extreme situation", - said Strelets.

As said the interlocutor of the Agency, 65% of Russian territory is situated on the perennial permafrost.

"She is, in Murmansk and in Arkhangelsk region, but these regions melting is not so bad. The economy is built not only on enterprises, and even many native villages and towns built on permafrost. In our work, we identified nine regions where the permafrost is everything: roads, houses, infrastructure and businesses. This Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Komi Republic, Yamalo-Nenets AO, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Krasnoyarsk Krai, Yakutia, Magadan region, Chukotka and Kamchatka", - said Strelets.

According to the Musketeers, the damage in $ 250 billion can be reduced if you take measures to prevent damage.

"Again, the amount of the loss is a relative thing. The Sochi Olympics cost $ 55 billion, the prevention of losses of 250 billion dollars can do about this sum," - said the scientist.
