Forecasters explained the causes of hazardous weather phenomena in Russia

The collision of warm and cold air masses resulted in a series of hazardous weather phenomena in the European part of Russia, which were observed on Friday and Saturday, told RIA Novosti the scientific Director of the hydrometeorological center Roman Vilfand.

According to him, after a few days heat began to receive cold air masses from the Kara sea and Novaya Zemlya.

"On Friday there was a sharp clash of air masses and the rapid development of convection (the blending process - ed.) in the atmosphere," — said the forecaster.

Vilfand said that "began a sharp displacement of the warm air, which quickly began to climb up the front line, this was a cloud formation, the upper limit of which was at an altitude of about ten kilometers."

The weather forecaster said that in such circumstances arise dangerous phenomena.

"Fall strong rainfall and, because of this there are flooding, strong winds and the storm," he said.

As explained Vilfand, first it was in the Northern areas of the Metropolitan region, and the night of the thunderstorm and the rain came and in the capital.

"The movement of the cold mass occurred in the northwestern, Central and Volga Federal districts, so storms, rain and wind were everywhere. The front section has not reached the South, so there remained the hot weather", — concluded the forecaster.

According to meteorologist, in the Tver region has dropped to 63 mm of rain in one night, in the Novgorod — 30 mm, in the Moscow and Smolensk — to 40 mm.
