A week earlier, Federal law enforcement agencies expanded the security perimeter around the residence of the President of the United States Donald trump, including Lafayette Park on the North side of the White house. The Park now encloses six-foot iron fence.
"We urge you to immediately open to the public in Lafayette square, which has long been a place where Americans can come together to freely exercise their constitutional rights in close proximity to the White house," reads the letter. "The transformation of this unique public Park located in the heart of the capital of our country, something similar to a militarized zone, it deprives citizens of access to the Park and sends the worst signal to the American public and people around the world," wrote the leaders of the Democrats. In their opinion, the approval of the local authority trump that the closure of Park is required for reasons of security is insufficient.
"This unique Park has to be a symbol of freedom and openness, not a militarized area for which the President trump huddled in fear of protesters calling for justice," said Pelosi in the signature to the published document.
