The ROC is satisfied with the appointment of Archbishop d Aniello new Nuncio in Russia

The Moscow Patriarchate welcomed the appointment of new Apostolic Nuncio (the Vatican Ambassador) to Russia, titular Archbishop Giovanni d Aniello, expressing confidence in the continuation of the Orthodox-Catholic cooperation "in an equally constructive way".

Earlier Pope Francis has appointed as Apostolic Nuncio in Russia, titular Archbishop Giovanni d Aniello. D Aniello is one of the most experienced diplomats of the Holy see.

"In the Russian Orthodox Church welcomed the appointment of new Apostolic Nuncio in Russia in the framework of the rotation, which traditionally occurs in the diplomatic missions of the Holy see. Archbishop Giovanni d Aniello known as an experienced diplomat, who had service in many countries in different regions of the world", - told RIA Novosti Secretary for inter-Christian relations of the Department for external Church relations (DECR) of the Moscow Patriarchate hieromonk Stefan (Igumnov).

He noted that the appointment of a new Nuncio has happened at a time when relations between the Russian and Roman Catholic churches are on the rise and realized many areas of cooperation, in which the Apostolic Nunciature in Moscow has traditionally played an important role.

"Do not forget that this rise is associated with the past in 2016 with a meeting between Patriarch Kirill and Pope Francis in Havana, which outlined a number of promising areas of cooperation associated with the pressing challenges of today are all Christians. It is a necessity to defend the traditional gospel values in the modern society, still relevant issue of support for Christians in those regions of the world where they today suffer persecution," - said the representative of the DECR.

Archbishop Giovanni d Aniello, according to Igumnov, has experience in the direction of the Middle East and North Africa, for several years he was engaged in the relevant subjects in the Department of state of the Holy see. Also D Aniello was responsible for the cooperation in the cultural sphere, development of educational programs and many others.

"The activities of the predecessors of Archbishop d Aniello in his post was highly successful and took place in a constructive interaction with the Russian Orthodox Church, Department for external Church relations, and we are confident that with the new nuncii this interaction will continue in the same constructive way", - concluded the Agency interlocutor.

Predecessor d Aniello Italian Archbishop Celestino Migliore, who led a diplomatic mission of the Holy see to the Russian Federation from may 2016, and in January was appointed by Pope Francis as Apostolic Nuncio in France.
