The United States is violating the rights of journalists and its own Constitution, the foreign Ministry said

U.S. authorities in the case of police actions against journalists, including the correspondent of RIA Novosti news Agency covering the protests in the country, violation of the legitimate rights of reporters - not only international law but also its own Constitution, said Monday the official representative of Russian foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova.

Earlier it was reported that the Minneapolis police deliberately fired tear spray against journalists - the crew of the TV channel VICE and RIA Novosti, Mikhail Turgiev after the dispersal of the protest action. MIA "Russia today" demanded from the authorities of the United States investigate the actions of the police.

"What we saw, and in particular I'm talking about the Russian journalist, though why we should separate Russian journalists from abroad - what is happening now in the United States against all journalists is not only a violation of their legitimate rights. It is in principle a violation of both domestic American law, the American Constitution and all the fundamental international legal instruments," - said Zakharov on the TV channel "Russia 24".

The OSCE representative on freedom of the media, Harlem Desir called for the US authorities to provide safe work of journalists covering the protests. The official representative of the UN Secretary General Stefan Dujarric, commenting on the incident, said that "all these cases should be investigated". In addition, the American non-governmental organization "Foundation for freedom of the press" (Freedom of the Press Foundation) included the incident with RIA Novosti journalist during protests in Minneapolis in its database and will report further details about the case.
