Climate conference for the first time in 15 years will not take place because of COVID-19

The next international climate negotiations will take place in November 2021, the negotiations in 2020 will not take place because of the pandemic of coronavirus, said the message of the organizing Committee of the UN conference on climate change COP26.

“The Bureau of the conference of the parties to the UN framework Convention on climate change together with the UK and its Italian partners today agreed a new date of COP26, now it will be held from 1 to 12 November 2021 in Glasgow” - said in the message.

As specified, the talks were originally scheduled for November 2020.

“Climate negotiations originally planned to be held once in two years, but in 2000 years the climate issue has become so acute that the talks were held every year. This type of migration is a unique case and is associated with a unique situation. For the first time in 15 years that happens. This, of course, bad, because the projects could begin, including, and in Russia will not start”, - said the head of the world wildlife Fund (WWF) of Russia Alexey Kokorin.

Framework Convention on climate change (UNFCCC), the UN includes agreement on the implementation of the Paris agreement.

The Paris agreement aims to prevent the end of the century temperature rise to no more than two degrees Celsius (preferably 1.5) compared to the pre-industrial period (mid nineteenth century). As follows from scientific reports, is now such a task would be impossible: even if current commitments are met in full, it means the warming of three to four degrees compared to pre-industrial times, which threatens to further melting of glaciers and the flooding of some island States, extreme weather events, disappearance of a number of species, spread of diseases, reduction of underground water resources, raise the issue of food security. This goal will require reducing greenhouse gas emissions in 2030 by about a third.
