The German foreign Ministry is concerned about the situation in the election campaign in Belarus after the arrest of presidential candidate Victor Babariko, said at a briefing in Berlin, the representative of the foreign Ministry Christopher Burger.
"Yesterday we had a conversation the Belarusian foreign Minister with the ambassadors of member States of the EU, the UK and the USA. The subject was the arrest of Victor Babariko. With regard to the position of the German government, then we are concerned to observe the latest escalation in the presidential election in Belarus, arrest of potential presidential candidate Babariko raises numerous questions about the preconditions for free and fair elections in Belarus," said Burger.
The Prosecutor General's office of Belarus opened a criminal case against the defendants in the "case of Belgazprombank", their actions have created "a real threat to the national security interests" of the Republic, said Friday the Belarusian Prosecutor General Aliaksandr kaniuk.
Earlier on Friday the state control Committee (SCC) of Belarus RIA Novosti said that criminal proceedings against the applicant for the post of President of Belarus Victor Babariko and a number of current and former employees of the BGB handed over to the Prosecutor General.
